Supporters of herbal treatment point out that filling the body with medications and chemicals is never a good thing. However, this does not mean that herbal treatments will always be effective. Using natural herbs and mixing them together in the right proportions can provide relief that antibiotics may fail to provide. However, use of chemicals and controlled regulation of the pharmaceutical industry means that one can of pop a pill without any worries of complications.

On the other hand, herbs are natural substances and will decay over a time. It is not possible to assess the allergic reactions of specific herbs for specific individuals. Dosage is also important. Over dose of antibiotics is always going to cause problems. Excessive dosage of herbal treatments may not lead to complications immediately. However, it is not recommended either.

A lot depends on the skills of the individual offering herbal treatment. From the source of the herbs to the manner in which the medications are prepared-everything matters a lot. Finally, proper analysis of the symptoms and diagnosis of the illness is important. A trial and error approach with the body is never a safe move.

There is also a possibility that the herbal treatments may interfere with the existing medications and chemical treatment. The best option is to opt for one before trying the other. Seeking conventional medical treatment and herbal treatment simultaneously can be very dangerous.

It is important to log on to the internet and know more about the various herbal treatments before proceeding. No treatment, no matter how good it is, can provide immediate and magical relief. Such treatments are dangerous and are best avoided.

Alternative medicine — what is it, exactly? What does it mean? Should you be trying it to get rid of your headache instead of taking a pill?

Alternative medicine is a category that encompasses various healing therapies and practices that do not fit into what is generally termed conventional or traditional medicine as practiced by medical doctors in the Western world. Examples include acupuncture, hypnosis, yoga, herbalism, homeopathy, energy healing, biofeedback and ayurveda. Even meditation can be grouped under alternative medicine because the practice is said to have myriad health benefits, from decreasing stress to lowering blood pressure and relieving pain.

Practiced for thousands of years all over the world and in different spiritual traditions, meditation can be a good introduction to alternative medicine because it is relatively simple, inexpensive and easy to incorporate into your routine. The practice focuses on calming your mind so that it ceases bouncing thoughts about like ping pong balls — which can certainly cause a headache!

Usually, all you need to meditate is a quiet spot and 15 to 20 minutes of uninterrupted time. Sitting in a comfortable position, you usually breath deeply and slowly in a regular pattern. In some traditions, you focus on a mantra or sound, or even your breathing — the pattern of inhaling and exhaling. If your mind strays, you bring it back to your focus.

In other traditions, you are aware of all the sensations and thoughts that flow through your mind. Many religions have their own forms of meditation, from Hinduism and Buddhishm to Christianity.

Meditation is highly personal, so give some thought to what form would best fit your lifestyle and traditions. There are many books and websites out there to guide you in your research. You can also check out classes in your area if you prefer groups. Yoga studios are a good place to start asking about classes and resources. Always remember that if a particular style doesn’t feel right, then it probably isn’t. Move on and try another style.

So have fun and take a step on an alternative road to health!

Your Family and Alternative Medicine

You are open to unconventional means of keeping your kids healthy and happy. You have no problem opening your mind to the possibilities of alternative medicine — that broad term that includes practices not commonly used or endorsed by the medical profession. After all, many of grandmother’s old-fashioned remedies would probably be found under the alternative medicine label.

But you do have a questioning mind. What alternative practices and therapies would work for your family? What are the risks?

In most cases, practices that fall under the rubric of mind-body medicine, such as music therapy, yoga and massage therapy, can be considered safe for most everyone, while herbal medications and homeopathic remedies require more caution. Herbs and other natural remedies, such as gingseng or arnica, are not held up to the rigourous standard required by pharmaceutical drugs, and few tests have been performed on how these remedies affect children. When you purchase a bottle of arnica, you must read the label carefully to see how much of the active herb is indeed in each pill, and if there are other substances mixed in with the pure arnica.

Always check the possible side effects, especially when using an herbal remedy for a child. Be sure of the correct dosage and that the medication is safe for children. You can talk with your pharmacist or the person at the health food store to obtain more information. If in doubt, pass.

As for alternative practices such as acupuncture, make sure you go to a reputable, licensed practitioner. Ask about education and training and thetrack record with kids. Keep your pediatrician informed and even ask for a recommendation. You want both the pediatrician and the alternative medical practitioner to have a complete picture of the care received by your child to manage the child’s health most effectively.

Explore the possibilities — just use a modicum of good sense and advice.

With the rise of Eastern medical practices in the US, many people who love the Eastern practice of acupuncture alos love cleaning products without harsh chemicals.
Household cleaning can be a tough job and people often turn to harsh chemicals to get the job done. Unfortunately, those chemicals may be harming you and your family. What product manufacturers don’t always tell you when they are marketing cleaning chemicals and supplies is that a lot of the ingredients in those products can be toxic or even deadly to humans. They may carry small-print warning labels, but they don’t always alert consumers to the full scope of possible dangers.
There are some simple solutions to this chemical dilemma, though. They are typically more economical than many of the store-bought brands and definitely offer a safer alternative to a lot of the cleaning chemicals found in most homes.
For instance, bleach can cause burns to more than just the skin. It can irritate or damage lungs and other respiratory tract tissues, as well the eyes. When mixed with ammonia, another possibly harmful household cleaning agent, the combination can be deadly if the fumes are inhaled. A simple mixture of water and vinegar can usually wipe out the tough jobs the harsh bleach and ammonia are intended to tackle.
Another alternative and safe cleaning agent is baking soda. It isn’t just for cooking; it helps give simple water or water-based cleaners a more powerful punch to knock out dirt. This natural cleaner also reduces nasty odors because it naturally absorbs them. Baking soda can be used to whiten and brighten a lot of things in your home, including your smile.
You are certain to smile more when you rid your home of the dangers many cleaning supplies carry. Simple solutions and some scrubbing power will keep you and your family safe and your home clean and fresh without the harm from some common cleaning chemicals. Usually, it just takes some water and maybe a little sweat to complete most cleaning tasks in the home.

One key to healthy living is a good, well-balanced diet. For those people who are not able to get all the recommended daily nutritional allowances through their regular diets, they may choose to use dietary supplements to maintain a healthy balance between lifestyle and wellness.
Dietary supplements are any sort of addition to a regular diet that is used to increase the health or speed the natural healing process of the body. They include a wide variety of herbs, minerals, vitamins, homeopathic remedies or many other non-pharmaceutical products. These supplements can be found in many forms, including liquid, pill and powder, among several others.
While most healthy people do get the nutrition they need from a regular diet, there are some who need to add a dietary supplement to their daily intake.  These types of supplements are often beneficial to health, especially for elderly people, pregnant women or those who are not in perfect health.
For the most part, dietary supplements can be used regularly and provide a safe method of adding necessary nutrients for better overall health. As with any addition to your regular routine, it is a good idea to consult your doctor before beginning a daily regimen of dietary supplements. Among other possible side effects, some supplements may be dangerous to use just prior to particular medical procedures.
Supplementing your diet will not cure diseases and probably not prevent them, but dietary supplements are great alternative health tools for providing the body what it needs to perform at its best. When the body is getting everything it requires to maintain healthy balances and peak performance, then a person is usually also better equipped to handle stress and emotional or spiritual pitfalls. By using dietary supplements to give the body essential nutrition it is otherwise lacking, a person can guide his or her own health to total wellness.

Alternative Skin Care to Avoid Cosmetic Procedures

Young people in America, especially young women, are seeking medical cosmetic procedures at earlier ages than in previous years. An alarming 27 percent or so of these procedures and plastic surgeries are performed on people ranging between 19 and 29 years of age, according to a report on “The Early Show” from CBS July 20, 2010.

A large portion of these younger people seeking to alter their appearances are receiving cosmetic treatments for their skin. Fortunately, they don’t need to go that far. There are some natural alternative methods for skin care that will help a person maintain skin elasticity and youthfulness. These natural methods are non-toxic and do not cause irreversible changes to the body. In addition, these skin care methods are much more affordable than medical cosmetic procedures.

The first key to healthy, beautiful skin is water. Hydrating the body with at least eight glasses of water each day is good for overall health, but also has excellent benefits for the skin. As people age, their bodies produce less hydration, leaving the skin at a loss for moisture. By drinking more water, a person is better able to produce the hydration necessary to keep the skin looking and feeling young and healthy.

A second healthy skin aid is lemons. Because lemons contain vitamin C, lemon juice can be a good facial wash. The vitamins are soaked directly into the skin when the wash is applied. It also helps reduce acne-causing oils in younger skin and provides good antioxidants and protection for older skin.

A third option for alternative skin care is aloe vera. In addition to its healing properties for burns, it is a good natural exfoliating agent. Aloe vera gently helps slough away dead skin cells, revealing the healthier, younger-looking skin beneath.

There are many additional natural alternative skin care remedies and methods available. If a young person begins taking care of their skin early, he or she will not have the need for drastic cosmetic procedures later in order to have healthy, beautiful skin.

One of the world’s most beneficial fruits for the human body is the coconut. The oil of the coconut can be used by people for numerous reasons, including cooking. It also has plenty of alternative health care purposes.

Coconut oil has several properties making it beneficial to the human body. Besides being a good antifungal, it also has antimicrobial properties and antibacterial properties. Coconut oil also contains antioxidants.

These properties make coconut oil a good choice for cooking because when ingested, it helps the body fight off infections and diseases, as well as providing a natural boost for the heart, liver and kidneys. Coconut oil can help keep cholesterol, blood sugar and blood pressure at normal levels and possibly aids in the production of insulin.

Another positive outcome of using coconut oil in cooking is that it helps the body’s systems work to absorb vitamins and minerals. Because it increases the body’s ability to absorb calcium and magnesium, it makes it easier for these nutrients to benefit the body. Coconut oil’s positive digestive qualities help improve teeth and bone structure.

Because it acts as an antimicrobial and antiviral, coconut oil may be applied topically to infected areas of skin. It helps the body speed up the healing process, especially in areas of bruising, as it aids with tissue repair.

Coconut oil is excellent for skin care. It is naturally moisturizing for the skin and speeds the healing of drying and flaking skin. Because of this property, coconut oil is beneficial in the treatment of many skin disorders, including psoriasis, eczema and dermatitis.

Because of its moisturizing properties, coconut oil makes an excellent conditioner for hair, as well. Applied topically to the scalp, it nourishes the hair, giving it a lustrous shine and helping re-grow hair damaged from harsh chemicals and split ends. Organic Diets Healthy for Kids

Organic foods do more than help preserve the environment. Eating organic food has some definite health benefits, too, especially for young children, according to a study conducted by a University of Washington research group.

While it was already widely known that a diet of organically-grown and -produced foods is helpful to a person’s health, the study proved that children eating this type of diet ingest far less harmful pesticides than children consuming a typical American diet.

The researchers studied children in similar age and income brackets from like geographical areas. Some of the kids continued eating the same types of diets they always had. The others were fed only organic foods. At the end of the study, researchers discovered a much larger amount of toxic chemicals in the urine of children eating a regular, non-organic diet.

Pesticides and other toxins are harmful to a body when they are ingested. Children are especially at high risk of harm to their bodies from toxic chemicals because of their size. Unfortunately, the types of foods children tend to choose to eat are not always the healthy option.

In addition to the fact that organic foods improve the soil quality and help prevent soil erosion, they also improve air quality. Water quality is benefited, as well, because of the lower number of harmful, toxic chemicals released into the air or seeping into ground water from pesticides.

Organic foods require less energy to produce, too. They are not sprayed or covered with massive amounts of chemicals and pesticides and, therefore, do not have to go through as much processing before they can be put onto tables for consumption.

With so many advantages for the environment, it is only natural that organic foods are also helpful to the body. They are in a more pure, non-chemically altered state when produced and when consumed. Reasonably, ingesting less toxic chemicals, such as pesticides, means a body is getting less harmful toxins. This also means people, especially young children, eating diets of organically-grown and -produced foods are making healthier choices for their bodies and the earth.
